Keeping all this in mind, a new business center has sprung up in the city in the prime Camac Street area. According to Rajesh Banka, chief executive of Fortune Business Point (FBP), anyone taking space at the new center will be able to avail of facilities that would put a small city to shame. Mr. Banka states tenants can move in on a permanent basis or even temporarily, until they find more suitable premises. He says he is talking with some multinational who have expressed interest in moving in. The place, however does not come cheap, with rents ranging between Rs 17,000-24,000 per month. But taking into account the location is on Camac Street, the price is "reasonable", says Banka. The entire area covers 1,600 square feet. But, as Banka points out, if the concept proves to be a success, more such centres will come up in the city. FBP also plans to take its show to other Metros. Meanwhile, a marketing team has been set up to sell the concept to prospective clients. Says Banka, "After a period of time, we are planning to add cellular telephone service for the first time in India, a page service, voice mail and video-conferencing." For the time being though, FBP offers telephone monitoring, receptionist service, secretarial services, telex, fax, E-mail, workstation for junior executives, as well as advertising and print assistance. For courier service, FBP has tied up with Skypark and Sita World travels will help out in hotel reservations. Assistance will also be provided in car rentals etc. These facilities will cost extra but Banka insists, will be "resonable". Bill will be presented at the end of each week. The office facilities will be available from 9am to 6:30 pm, Banka says. Banka says, "Primarily, we were involved in electronics. But after a while, we also found that we had some extra space and decided to set up the center. There is a lack of such facilities in Calcutta and till date, we have received encouraging responses." Banka says the lease period is for 11 months and those taking up temporary quarters, will have to stay for a minimum period of one month. He did not rule out any rise in rents. As for the amount spent on setting up the Business Centre, Banka would not disclose the figure for "certain reasons". Incidentally, Banka designed the set-up himself. Starting, "Interior decoration is a hobby of mine." Each executive chamber/suite accommodates modern furniture, is centrally air-conditioned, fully carpeted, offers channel music, direct dialling electronic telephones, an executive desk and chairs for visitors. The chamber provisions to install computers with networking facilities. As the center's leaflet says, "FBP takes care of all details, So that one can concentrate on their business. All these are available at a fraction of the cost of establishing an of office in plush and premium business areas." FBP is counting on the savings aspect to lure customers. After all, few places in Calcutta can offer the service Fortune promises. One can only hope that FBP services do not deteriorate the way all things seem to do in Calcutta. Should that happen, MNCs will be moving out quicker than a flash. |
